President Barack Obama has nominated Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly to be the next commander of U.S. Southern Command, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta announced.

The United States has no interest in establishing new military bases in Asia and the Pacific, but welcomes opportunities to rotate forces there and would consider doing so in the Philippines, if offered, said Navy Adm. Robert F. Willard, the U.S. Pacific Command commander.

The Air Force will drop 10,000 airmen in fiscal 2013 as the service reshapes itself to meet new challenges, but will retain the capabilities needed to support the joint force, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz said.
